Conditions Treated at Chapel Hill Ophthalmology

Our Chapel Hill, NC ophthalmology office is proud to offer our area a robust array of services related to the diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions. The following is a look at just a few of the most common conditions our eye doctor team treats every day:

Conditions Treated at Chapel Hill Ophthalmology

  • Myopia or nearsightedness. Nearsightedness is one of the most common conditions treated not just by our eye doctor team, but by eye doctors everywhere. This is a visual impairment in which objects close can be readily seen but objects at a distance are blurred and incomplete. Treatment for myopia includes temporary solutions like eyeglasses and contacts as well as permanent solutions like LASIK surgery.
  • Hyperopia or farsightedness. Farsightedness is also a common eye condition that is the opposite of nearsightedness. Here, the affected person can see objects at a distance clearly but objects close are blurred. It can likewise be corrected similar to myopia; with glasses, contacts and surgery. It is important to note that while the effects are similar, hyperopia is not the same as presbyopia.
  • Presbyopia. Presbyopia has similar symptoms of hyperopia in that people with this condition are unable to see objects close-up. However, presbyopia is specifically an age-related condition that occurs when the eye becomes less flexible (hyperopia occurs at birth and in child years when the eye becomes irregularly-shaped). Many seniors are likely to develop some form of presbyopia with many minor cases requiring only a pair of dollar store reading glasses. However, surgery or prescriptive glasses may be recommended for other cases of presbyopia.
  • Astigmatism. This condition is caused by an imperfection in the eye's curvature and that imperfection results in a distorted vision. Treating astigmatism is like the above conditions treated in that we may offer contact lenses, glasses, or surgery.
  • Glaucoma. Glaucoma has the potential of being a severely disabling disease if not caught early. When caught early, our team will typically recommend medication that will prevent the condition from worsening. For bad cases or for those who do not want to continue on medication, eye surgery may be recommended.
  • And more.
