Dry Eye Tips for the Winter

When you have dry eyes, it can be uncomfortable and possibly painful. The winter is often the worst time of the year for dry eye. Our ophthalmologists at Chapel Hill Ophthalmology provide a wide range of eye care services, including treatment for dry eye. If you live in or around Chapel Hill and are experiencing dry, red eyes, our team is here to help. Let’s look at a few tips that can help when your eyes get irritated.

Dry Air

Often, it is the dry air in the winter that causes dry eye. The air is not only drier, but it is often windy as well. That dry air blowing into your eyes can cause your tears to evaporate more quickly, leading to dry eyes. When you are at home, it is a good idea to get a humidifier and use it to increase the amount of moisture in the air. You may also set one up near your work desk to help with your eyes during the day.

Apply A Compress

With your eyes being so dry, adding moisture can help quite a bit. This can be done by running some warm water onto a clean towel and draping it over your closed eyes. This can help to bring some moisture to the area. It also helps by keeping your eyes closed for a little while. This can relieve some of the pain of dry eye as well as giving your eyes a much-needed break.

Eye Drops

Another way to add moisture to your eyes is to use artificial tears. These eye drops can be purchased over the counter and can provide a lot of relief. These eye drops can be used at any time no matter where you are. They are more effective when used with a warm compress and a humidifier. The key is to get moisture to your eyes and to keep it there to reduce irritation.
