Addressing Dry Eyes
Dry eye occurs when a person does not have adequate amounts of quality tears to nourish and lubricate the eyes. This is usually a chronic eye condition where the front surface of the eyes is not maintained due to the lack of tear production.
In perfectly healthy eyes, blinking causes tears to spread across the cornea of the eyes, and provide lubrication. Tears also wash away foreign objects that tend to get into the eyes. Tears flow into drainage ducts in the corner of the eyelid, then drain into the nose.
When dry eye occurs, tear production and drainage are not balanced. Dry eye can cause irritation, burning, a gritty or scratchy feeling, excess watering, blurred vision, and more. At our clinic in Chapel Hill, our eye doctor has several dry eye treatment solutions. We can prescribe preservative free artificial tears, hot compress masks, or omega 3 vitamins to address the problem.
