What is Prokera?

Prokera

Prokera is a medical device that treats certain eye conditions and diseases. Our eye doctor can tell you more about how this device works and whether it could work for you. Our ophthalmologist in Chapel Hill can help you determine if Prokera is right for you.

What is Prokera?

Prokera is a medical device used by ophthalmologists to heal the surface of the eye. It is a cryopreserved, amniotic membrane that is used directly on the eye to deliver anti-inflammation effects, to heal scars, and to facilitate the eye’s natural healing process. This device helps the cornea to heal itself and without any harmful side effects.

This membrane is similar to the placenta. The placenta protects the baby from harm and helps the baby develop. The biological properties within the Prokera amniotic membrane help repair the surface of the eye. When Prokera is used to treat the eyes, the eyes experience less inflammation and less scarring.

The Prokera Membrane

The Prokera membrane is clear and thin, much like the surface of your eye. Shaped like a large contact lens, the Prokera membrane is inserted to protect and heal damaged eye tissue. Wearing the lens is not painful. A Prokera membrane can be used to address problems like:

  • Chemical burns to the eye
  • Keratitis
  • Partial limbal stem cell deficiency
  • Corneal scars and defects
  • Inflammation
  • Other diseases of the eye's surface
  • Prokera is only available from an eye doctor.
